League Division 1
Round 4
Doire Ó gConaile 2-08 v
Naomh Phádraig 1-10
A late Paul Greene pointed free maintained Derrygonnelly’s excellent start
to the season as they picked up
both the points against St. Pat’s on Friday
night.
This was a close contest throughout but one that the Harps
just about edged
and it leaves them sitting pretty at the top of the table alongside Belcoo
with three wins and a
draw from their opening four games.
This gives Derrygonnelly something to build on when the league resumes
following
Fermanagh’s clash with Tyrone and it would seem at this stage that
they are going to be one of the challengers in
the league this season.
For the visitors there was excellent performances from corner backs Eamon
McHugh and Barry
Gallagher.
Paul Ward had an effective game up front while Kevin Cassidy bagged an
impressive 2-03 of his side’s
total.
For St. Pat’s, Paul Cosgrove was in brilliant form at midfield where he was
ably assisted by the lively
Eamon Maguire while in attack substitute Jason
Cadden showed up well in the second half.
St. Pat’s opened
the scoring with an early point from a Pat Cadden free but
this was to be the only time in the game that the home side
held the lead
and the Harps responded immediately to this with a Cassidy goal which was
put on a plate for him by
Paul Ward.
Kevin McGrath then tagged on a point for Derrygonnelly to give them a three
point advantage, 1-01 to
0-01.
The Donagh outfit registered a number of wides over the next period but
Eamon Maguire did hit back with a
point for them although this was answered
by a point from Paul Ward.
Points, however, from Eamon Maguire, Gary
Maguire and Kevin Maguire brought
St. Pat’s back into the game by half-time with the sides going in level at
the
interval, 0-07 to 1-04, with Cassidy having notched a point for
Derrygonnelly before the break.
Derrygonnelly regained
the initiative at the start of the second half as
they rattled over three unanswered points, two from Cassidy and one
from
Jonathan McGurn, but at the midway stage of the half St. Pat’s were once
more on level terms as Jason Cadden
punched a high ball from Paul Mc Caffrey
to the back of the net.
However, they were unable to get their noses in
front and Derrygonnelly hit
back with a goal of their own with Ward again teeing up Cassidy who had the
simple task
of tapping the ball to the net.
Points from Eamon Maguire, Gary Maguire and Jason Cadden seemed to have
earned
St. Pat’s a share of the spoils as the game drew to a close but
substitute Paul Greene converted a late free for
the Harps to clinch them
the victory.

The senior team were very lucky to get a draw after a poor performance in the second half, which
seen Belcoo come back from a very good first half performance from the Harps.
The Harps lead at the interval 2-08 to 0-05, which should have seen the game dead and buried. First
half goals from Sean Meehan & Aidan Gallagher saw the Harps take a good lead which should have left Belcoo behind. However,
the second half ended up being the complete opposite of the first! The young Belcoo team came into their element, and with
plenty of long high ball going into the full forward line, Belcoo's John Carrigan managed to get 2 goals. The Harps fell apart
all over the field, with Belcoo dominating the middle of the field and solid performance from the back. The Harps only managed
to get 2 points in the second, one from Sean Meehan. Too much messing about in the centre of the field and the inability to
get the ball saw Derrygonnelly's downfall. After a 9 point lead at the interval, Derrygonnelly were lucky to end up with a
draw.
